How to Convert ON Grid Solar System to Hybrid Solar System

Under the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, many people must have installed on-grid solar systems on the roofs of their homes, but there are some disadvantages of installing on-grid solar systems. There are some advantages too. So here, talking about the disadvantages, this system only works when there is electricity in your home. If the grid supply is not coming to your home, then this system will not work, and you will not get any benefit from the solar panel.

Talking about the advantages, there is no use of the battery, so here you save the cost of the battery. But many people do not know that it does not work after the electricity goes out, and they unknowingly install this system. After that, when they do not get its benefit, they think about how we can convert this on-grid system to off-grid, meaning even after the electricity goes out, you keep getting electricity from your solar panel.

ON Grid & Off Grid Solar Inverter VOC

So in today’s post, you will be told how you can convert your on-grid system to a hybrid solar system. So there can be many different ways to do this. The first and easiest way is to remove the solar panel you have installed on your on-grid system and buy a separate off-grid inverter and connect it to it.

You will have to connect the solar panel according to the off-grid inverter because the VOC of the off-grid inverter is quite low, and the VOC of the on-grid system is quite high. Here, all the panels that are installed in the on-grid system are installed in series. However, if your system is large, different strings are made there by connecting many solar panels in series and then connecting them in parallel.

That is why their VOC becomes quite high. And here, if we talk about the on-grid inverter, which we call a grid-tie inverter, its VOC is also quite high. These inverters can support from 160 volts to 1000 volts. But here, if we talk about the off-grid system, then there, if you have an inverter of four batteries and MPPT technology, it can support a maximum VOC of only 220 volts.

If you go towards transformer-less technology, then this VOC range goes up to 400 or 450 volts, so in such a case, you can also connect up to 9 solar panels in series. Here, if you want to convert your on-grid system to off-grid as it is, you will need a DC change-over, so you can shift all your solar panels to another inverter with the help of a DC change-over. For this, you will need to choose the right inverter.

How to Convert ON Grid Solar System to Hybrid Solar System

First, you need to find out the VOC of your system. Find out the VOC of the panels you have installed. If you have a 500W panel installed, its VOC is 50 volts. In such a case, if you have connected 10 panels in series, that is, a 5kW system, 10 panels have been connected in series, then the VOC of your system becomes 500 volts.

So here, now you get this VOC in the market in transformer-less technology or more battery bank inverters, so with the help of a DC change-over, you can directly connect your panels to that inverter and, after the electricity goes out, connect those panels to the off-grid inverter with the help of a DC change-over, as shown in the photo.

But in this, you incur quite a high cost because you will have to buy an inverter that supports more batteries, and you also have to buy that many batteries.

Besides this, another method exists. There are many companies’ battery-less inverters in the market. Battery-less inverters are also coming in transformer-less technology, so you can run your home’s load directly from the solar panel without a battery. For example, Smarten Kranti Plus inverter is now coming as a battery-less inverter, on which you can directly connect almost 15 panels in series.

How to Convert ON Grid Solar System to Off-grid Without Battery

It will run your house’s load directly without a battery, so Smarten company has different models like 5kva, 8kva, 10kva. So before taking these models, you must pay special attention to some things like, for these inverters, the voltage coming from your solar panel should be at least 400 volts, meaning there should be at least 8 solar panels in series.

Here, if there are 8 panels of 500W, then you will get 400 volts of power from the solar panel, but instead of 8 panels, you will have to connect 10 panels in series on this.

Then you will get approximately 500 volts of electricity from your solar panel at all times. Connecting 10 solar panels in series means you need a 5kW system. That is, you must install at least 5kW solar panels to use this inverter.

Smarten Kranti+ 5KVA

You can install more according to their model capacity, like here, if you take a 5kva inverter, you get a capacity to run a load of up to 4200 watts, so here you will install 5kW panels on it. It will comfortably run your load of up to 4200 watts at peak time.

Smarten Kranti+ 8KVA

If you take an 8kva inverter, it can run a load of up to 6500 watts. So here, you will have to install at least 8kW solar panels on it to get a supply of up to 6500 watts at peak time.

Smarten Kranti+ 10KVA

Similarly, on 10Kva, you get a load capacity of 8kW, so here you will have to install at least 12kW solar panels. Here, the maximum input voltage range is 750 volts, meaning you can connect up to 15 panels in series. If you want to do more, you must connect in series of 15-15. If you connect in series of 15-15, you can install panels of up to 15kW on a 10kva inverter, but the maximum capacity given here is

On 5kva, it is 10kW, meaning you can install a 10kW panel on a 5kva inverter. You can install up to 20kW solar panels on an 8kva inverter, which is quite a lot. So, those with an on-grid system of up to 20kW should take an 8kva inverter. Similarly, a 10kva one can install panels of up to 35kW, meaning you can connect a 35kW solar system with a 10kva inverter.

Here, their low solar cut voltage range is 300 volts, meaning if you have installed solar panels and the electricity coming from them, or say, the voltage range, goes below 300 volts, the supply from your solar panel will be disconnected, and your load will stop working, so keep these things in mind.

You must purchase the inverter according to your need and load capacity and connect your panels to the Smarten company’s inverter with the help of a DC change-over. You will have to run your house’s load through this inverter, so you can convert your on-grid system to off-grid in this way.

The best way is to go for a hybrid system. Hybrid inverters have come into the market that work like both on-grid and off-grid. So, directly convert your on-grid system to a hybrid system, so you get the benefit of both on-grid and off-grid.
