On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the launch of his government’s “PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana,” which will give one crore households 300 free units of electricity each month. For this project, the Center will invest Rs 75,000 crore. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman first revealed the plan when she read the Interim Budget 2024–25.

“We are introducing the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana to promote sustainable development and people’s well-being. The prime minister stated on X that the project, which has an investment of more than Rs 75,000 crore, aims to light up 1 crore households by giving away up to 300 units of free electricity each month.

PM Modi continued, “To ensure that there is no financial burden on the people, the Center will offer substantial subsidies to heavily concessional bank loans, which will be given directly to people’s bank accounts.”

A National Online Portal will be integrated for all stakeholders.

He further stated that incentives will be provided to urban local bodies and panchayats to encourage rooftop solar systems within their jurisdictions in order to popularize this scheme at the grassroots level.

How to apply for PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana?

1. As part of the plan, residential properties such as homes or buildings will have solar photovoltaic (PV) panels installed on top of them.

2. Go to https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in to apply for the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

3. To begin, one must register using the following information on the portal:

  • Select your State
  • Select your electricity distribution company
  • Fill in your electricity consumer number.
  • Enter your mobile number
  • Enter your email

4. After completing the first step. The consumer’s consumer number and mobile number are required for login. then submit your application using the form for rooftop solar.

5. The customer will then need to wait for the approval of the feasibility. After completion, any of the DISCOM-registered vendors will install the plant.

6. After installation is finished, apply for a net meter and submit the plant details.

7. Following the installation of the net meter and DISCOM inspection, the commissioning certificate will be generated via the portal.

8. Upon completion, the commissioning report will be sent to the customer. Clients will need to use the portal to submit their bank account information and a voided check.

9. Within 30 days, customers’ bank accounts will receive the subsidy.

The launch of the solar power scheme was first announced by PM Modi following the inauguration of the Ram Mandir last month. A press release from the Press Information Bureau (PIB) dated January 22, 2024 states that the Prime Minister chaired a meeting to launch the Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana, which aims to install rooftop solar on one crore houses, immediately following his visit to Ayodhya on the auspicious occasion of Suryawanshi Bhagwan Shri Ram’s consecration.
